Air
Phuket International Airport is serviced by many major airlines,
with direct flights from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Perth,
to name a few. Domestic airlines such as Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways,
Phuket Air, Thai Air Asia and Air Andaman operate routes throughout
Thailand (and beyond) from Phuket with hourly arrivals and departures
for Bangkok. Many airlines are now offering e-ticketing services
- see the Directory
Of Services for airline contact details.
Private jets
can land at Phuket International Airport - a week’s notice
must be given. Applications can be made through the airports authority,
or alternatively through a yacht agent.
To
find out flights and prices of scheduled airlines departing Phuket,
contact a local booking agent – see the Directory
Of Services for more details.
Road
There are a large number of vehicle rental agencies in Phuket, renting
everything from mopeds to economy cars to VIP limousines. Overseas
driving licenses and international driving permits are accepted.
The roads are mostly all paved and in reasonable condition. Island
driving habits may appear some what erratic to begin with, but with
a little extra vigilance, driving is easily mastered. Taxis mostly
take the form of tuk tuks (four-wheeled mini vans usually painted
red), which are abundant throughout the island. It is now obligatory
for tuk tuks to display fixed rate fares to various locations around
the island in their vehicle. There are also a number of air-conditioned
metered taxis around the island, though they are often difficult
to find; it is better to call the taxi company in advance and book
one.
An air-conditioned
bus service operates around Phuket City and major points nearby,
using green coloured buses. Bus stops are clearly marked and you
pay the driver/conductor when you get on. Blue buses operate between
the major beach destinations and Phuket City, and can be hailed
at convenient locations along route. The smaller songthaews (blue-white
open-sided vehicles) operate from the fresh market in Phuket City
to locations south, such as Chalong, Rawai and Nai Harn, and also
go to some of the West Coast beaches. Each is clearly marked with
its route. Songthaews are relatively slow, but they leave throughout
the day and are cheap.
Buses
to other provinces leave from the main bus station in Phuket City,
across from the Royal Phuket City Hotel (see Phuket
City Map). Prices and times of departure can be found at the
terminal.
Boat
For trips to the outer islands or for crew and guest transfers,
speed boats and/or long tail boats are available for hire from the
marinas and from most beaches and bays on the island.
