AND DINING
The visitor
to Phuket is in for a culinary treat as the island offers some of
Thailand’s finest cuisine and restaurants. Thailand’s
famous cuisine is delicious and spicy, seasoned with a characteristic
mix of lemongrass, fresh coriander, garlic, chillies and lime juice.
Other ingredients include ginger, tamarind, coconut milk, basil,
ground peanuts, galangal root and all manner of herbs and vegetables
that you may never have heard of. Common dishes are red, green and
yellow curries, hot and sour soups and noodles, with rice being
the main staple. Surrounded by the sea, Phuket has bountiful fresh
seafood - many restaurants have water tanks from which you can select
your live fish, lobster, prawns or crabs. The standard of food is
high whether your choice is fine dining or at one of the food markets.
Phuket also has many western restaurants for all budgets, from fast
food to fine dining establishments.
The
many bakeries on Phuket offer croissants, breads, pies and pastries,
and there are a few good delicatessens that provide imported cheeses
and meats. The bigger supermarkets have a good range of alcohol
and some wines. Food shopping and provisioning can be done at the
big shopping centres for convenience, or alternatively at the local
markets, and from many suppliers that can be found in the Directory
of Services section.
