Sat Phones
Phuket is covered by the Inmarsat IOR satellite, area code 872.
Iridium and GAN also have satellite coverage throughout Thai waters.
ACES also offer a satellite phone service, see their ad opposite
for more details.
Internet
The internet can be easily accessed at the numerous internet cafes
around the island – some cafes now offer high speed satellite
connections, ADSL and broaband. Wifi access is also becoming more
readily available. Alternatively, accounts can be opened with a
local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and paid monthly, based on
usage, or a card with a fixed credit can be purchased from most
medium-sized mini-marts, newsagents, supermarkets and department
stores.
Land Lines
Public telephones – both coin and card versions – can
be found at post offices and many other locations around the island.
Domestic and international cards can be purchased from many small
businesses in various denominations. International phone and fax
services are provided by the Thai Telecommunications Authority office
on Phang Nga Road in Phuket City. Also tour offices, hotels, travel
agents and some internet cafes offer these services.
Domestic Calls
Operator and overseas directory assistance : 100
Directory assistance (local) : 1133
All Provincial codes have now became part of the telephone number,
abolishing traditional Provincial codes, making all numbers nine
digits. For example, all Phuket numbers are preceded by 076, whether
you are calling from within Phuket or not.
International Calls
For outgoing international calls use the prefix 001 + Country Code.
There are two exceptions; Malaysia and Laos. For Malaysia dial 007-60,
followed by the local area code. And for Laos, simply dial 007-856
before the number. Thailand’s country code is 66. If making
a call to Thailand from overseas, dial 00 66 and the nine digit
telephone number, minus the first ‘0’.
