The
10th Singapore Straits Regatta
Date:
15 January 2004
Filipino
yacht Clariden Karakoa cleans up on a great day of yacht
racing in the 10th Singapore Straits Regatta. Skipper Ray Ordoveza
was the happiest man on Batam today as he scored three wins in three
races. With winds blasting across the course at 15-18 knots it was
a superb day and Clariden Karakoa made the rest of this exceptional
fleet look ordinary.
The
thirty-one boat fleet headed out to the race course from the Riau
Yacht Club. The equatorial waters were shining and flecked with
white as monsoon winds whipped up the waves. These were ideal conditions
for yacht racing and three races were planned for the day. And in
each race it was the same story – Clariden Karakoa,
Clariden Karakoa, Clariden Karakoa. The rest of
the fleet was left to battle it out in their wake.
Skipper
Ray Ordoveza who was at the helm explained his victories “well
it’s a team effort. We have all the right ingredients in place
– an excellent boat, a well prepared hull, good sails. But
it’s the crew on the day that mix them together – and
of course sailing is not just about one boat. There are so many
variables – wind, waves, current, the other boats. And that’s
why I love this sport. We have a great team on board, an absence
of egos and we’re united by one aim – to win this regatta.
We’ve taken a great step to achieving that goal today”.
Ray
Roberts, skipper on board Australia’s Hollywood Boulveard
echoed Ray Ordoveza’s sentiments “we’re pleased
with the days sailing. We got a second and a third in the first
two races and we’ve been sailing well. We got to this regatta
a few days early to get a new team used to one another in these
testing conditions. Each race today was very busy – in each
race we travelled round the course four times. That’s a hell
of a lot of tacking, lots of spinnaker hoists and drops… so
plenty of places where errors can creep in. But we did well and
I’m proud of my team.”
After
four races in the regatta Clariden Karakoa is far ahead
of the pack and in second is Hong Kong’s Stella Minter
Ellison. One point back is Hollywood Boulevard and
one point behind her is Hi Fidelity from Hong Kong.
This
is also a crucial regatta in the Omega Asian Yachting Circuit and
as things stand it would produce a tie at the top of the leaderboard
between Hollywood Boulevard and Stella Minter Ellison.
But it’s too early to predict the outcome of the Singapore
Straits Regatta and two more windward/leeward races are to be run
tomorrow (Friday) with racing on Saturday and Sunday too.
The
Singapore Straits Regatta is a prestigious event in it’s own
right and it fits into the larger Omega Asian Yachting Circuit that
groups together the premier sailing events in the region.
1)
Raja Muda International Regatta, Malaysia (November 2003)
2) Phuket King’s Cup, Thailand (December 2003)
3) Singapore Straits Regatta, Singapore (January 2004)
4) China Sea Race, Hong Kong to Philippines April 2004)
Through
the season the yachts that compete in the elite Racing Division
at each regatta earn points. The best three “final results”
for a yacht from the four regattas count towards an end of season
total; these totals produce the winner and a new Asian Champion
is crowned.
The
Singapore Straits Regatta (and all the events on the Omega AYC)
is being filmed for international television and in all, the event
will reach an audience of over 200 million households around the
globe. The World will be watching as the 10th Singapore Straits
Regatta sets sail from Changi Sailing Club.
The
Omega Asian Yachting Circuit is sponsored by Omega Watches and Malaysia
Airlines.
The
Singapore Straits Regatta is sponsored by the Boat Asia, Panalpina,
Indochine and Brewerkz and the Singapore Tourism Board.
