REFIT AND REPAIR

Phuket is now considered to be the best place in South East Asia to undertake high quality yacht repairs at reasonable prices. Facilities range from mobile repairs, in water repairs at any of the island's marinas, to full haul out and refit services at the Boat Lagoon Marina or one of Phuket Cities slipways. There are also small yards in Chalong and Rawai that service the growing numbers of custom new builds of sailing and power craft.

From fibreglass repairs to desalinator servicing and sail making, all marine trades are represented in Phuket. The Thai people are well known for having a strong work ethic and good technical skills. This applies equally to the marine trades, where you will find skilled trades people in engineering, machining, electrical, electronics, refrigeration, rigging, painting, fibreglass, carpentry, shipwright, upholstery, canvas and sail making. In most of these fields there is a wide choice of contractors and an equally wide price range.

Many of the major marine manufacturers are represented in Phuket or Bangkok, enabling new sales, genuine spares, warranty work and authorised installations. These include Caterpillar, Cummins, MAN, Volvo, Yamaha, Mercury, Northern Lights, Raymarine, Simrad, Mastervolt, B&G, BEP, Navtec, Racor, Spectra Watermakers, Sea Recovery, Awlgrip, International and Jotun. You will find many of these representatives listed in this publication.

For haul out and refit work there are a number of facilities. Ratanachai Slipway in Phuket City has the capacity to haul out vessels up to 45 metres and 180 tons using its railway type slipway. Last year Phuket based superyacht, Fortune Elephant, underwent an extensive refit and full Awlgrip paint job at Ratanachai. Onsite servicing includes extensive machine shop, shipwright and fibreglass repair and rejuvenation. Ratanachai can be very busy, so booking ahead is advisable at peak times. The yard is located up the river past the Seatran ferry terminal. Further up the river you will find other smaller haul out facilities. The Phuket Boat Lagoon Marina has a large hard standing area and three travel lifts. Vessels up to 75 tons can be lifted there. Currently the Boat Lagoon is the hub of Phuket's refit industry and has onsite contractors for all trades. Yacht Haven Marina is currently discussing options to establish a hardstand and haul out facility in the near future.

If you are in need of minor repairs or if you're considering a refit, why not take advantage of Phuket's facilities, skills and reasonable prices. Facilities and trades people can be busy at peak times so booking ahead can save disappointment later. You will find contact details of fax, phone and email for many of the island's contractors and haul out facilities in this guide so call ahead for quotes before you arrive.
